While researching the establishment of Islington Mill in the 1820s, we compiled a selection of music from the era which we used as a soundtrack to our public engagement events. The music is a mixture of folk ballads, Protestant church music, and classical/orchestral pieces which were being composed at the time. The mill workers led extremely gruelling lives in which leisure and entertainment were scarce, but at worship or in the pubs and taverns, music was available and these are some of the works that our Georgian Salfordians may have encountered.
