Sasha Ali (bysashaali)

Sasha Ali is a British Artist (currently residing in Manchester) who graduated from De Montfort University with a BSc Fashion Technology Degree (with Honours), which was achieved following her life-long passion for all things sartorial.

As a child she was an avid reader and would spend endless hours in her bedroom absorbed in a pile of books. She enjoyed doodling swirls and shapes, and drawing eyes and faces in between reading the different books.

For her artwork, she is inspired by nature, architecture (particularly symmetry and clean lines), the female face/form, eyes, fashion, geometric patterns, her Asian heritage/culture: especially henna (also known as mehndhi) and western society/aspects from life growing up in the UK. Her preferred tools for her craft vary for the piece being created. She mainly uses graphite/pencil, ink, gouache, watercolour, mixed media and most recently Procreate/Illustrator. Her work encompasses fluidity and femininity in both monochrome and lashings of colour: all the way from the soft, muted, pastel shades, to the loud, intense, vibrant hues.

For her ‘STAMPED’ collection she took inspiration from her childhood fascination with stamps. The collection juxtaposes popular culture, fashion, TV, film, current affairs, and politics in aesthetically pleasing works of art, depicting both the lighter and darker sides to consumerism, with, at times, a paradoxical and tongue-in-cheek approach. Queen Elizabeth II stamps are a huge inspiration for this, and Chanel as a strong female lead/recognised brand and design aesthetic.

She sways towards the ‘Pop Art’-esque style of painting in the manner of the drawing appearing, in the traditional sense, stamped. She turns things on their head and everyday objects/subjects, and even phrases, are seen with a twist, utilising word-play, to produce contemplative pieces of art. She would go as far as saying she draws/paints her words, as all her ideas are formed from, or around, words and phrases which then become the captions.
