Christopher Burke

Nowadays, I maintain my own drawing and painting practice, however, I do not consider myself a formal artist. I am taking this time to develop my artistic practice and try new ideas and things more important to my development as an artist

I have managed, delivered and co-facilitated Art therapy groups for service users in both hospital & community settings over the last four years, mostly whilst on clinical placements within NHS Trusts. Then later as an Honorary Art Therapist for Central & North West London NHS Trust. The age & ethnic demographic of service users varied: – from young adults with A.S.P.D & B.P.D, to older adults with learning disabilities and patients on an acute inpatient ward with schizophrenia and severe personality disorders. The Art therapy group offered a consistent, safe & confidential space, where clients could express themselves by using the art materials. There was additional provision offered for more in-depth 1:1 therapy with individual clients, usually in the afternoon or straight after the main group.

I have also worked as an Arts’ in-health project worker. Together, we arranged gallery visits, hosted a bi-monthly film club and other social events. I represented the Central North-West London Arts in health Team at the, “Art of Mentalizing: Communicating the Unknown” conference, held at the Pratt Institute in New York (in 2016). In November 2015, I addressed the 34th Forensic Arts Therapies Advisory Group conference about an Art therapy group I’d facilitated, whilst on placement in a medium & low-secure forensic unit in SW London (at Springfield Hospital).

I used to work for St Georges University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and more recently the Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust. The contracts there were very challenging and varied.

I’ve developed a strong professional objectivity and maturity that helped me through these contracts and have maintained that hardworking and strong work ethic in all activities. I am a strong communicator, combined with an easy-going friendly personality.  I can work autonomously, whilst still being part of a large team and NHS Trust.

In the past, I have been affiliated with the following organisations in a voluntary capacity: – MIND (Wandsworth and Westminster), The Bethlem Gallery (Beckenham, Kent), The Other Side Gallery (An online gallery dedicated to Outsider artists) and Pride in London.

I am HCPC certified, (AS15421) and a member of BAAT.
