About this event

Summer School is a 4-day series of workshops and masterclasses, that are free to attend for participants of Islington Mill’s WEAVE programme. New participants are welcome to sign up at the event for free to enjoy our full programme across the week.

The modules have been chosen and developed through conversations with the Islington Mill community and are designed to support creative individuals and organisations. Whether you are a freelance performer yet to fill in your first tax return, a mid-career artist, or maker with an established business, we have classes to support your development and help you grow in confidence.

There are workshops running over the week, with large panel discussions on Tuesday and Wednesday.


Day 1 – Tuesday 24 May

Artist Development and Support

Panel discussions hosted by Rachel Goodyear with representatives from organisations, galleries and producers. There will be conversation around development programmes, working relationships between organisations and artists and what is missing locally.

Day 2 – Wednesday 25 May

Creative Spaces

Led by Erika Rushton and designed for artists and creatives interested in space. Including finding it, managing it and mechanisms for making space cost effective. Split into workshops and a large panel discussion with guests.

Day 3 – Thursday 26 May

Online Workshops and Site Visits

We will be running various workshops online from the list below and doing site visits to hear from creative organisations in their own spaces.

Day 4 – Friday 27 May

Business Journeys

We will be hearing from artists and makers about their journey and how they’ve managed to grow sustainable creative businesses. Then there will be the opportunity for WEAVE participants who have completed 12 hours of the Summer School to pitch directly for our Industry Partnering Awards.

Please let us know which days you would like to attend and which workshops you are interested in when you register. Some workshops will be repeated if there is enough interest.

The minimum commitment for attending Summer School is the equivalent of two days in attendance, or a minimum of 12 hours in total across the 4 days. This can include workshops, panel discussions, 1 – 1 support, online workshops and socials. However if you are unable to attend in person and are interested in attending our day of online workshops please still register to attend and indicate this when completing the registration form.


WEAVE is our free business support programme for Greater Manchester based artists, creatives and SMEs. We will help you sign up to WEAVE at the beginning of Summer School.

About the venue

On Tuesday 24, Wednesday 25 and Friday 26 May the Summer School will take place in person at People’s History Museum. On Thursday 26 May workshop activity will take place remotely with sessions taking place online via Zoom on this day. There will also be the opportunity to attend site visits on Thursday 26 May.

The ramp to the museum has a handrail to the left hand side. There are also six steps to the left hand side of the main entrance, with a handrail on either side.

The Summer School will take place in the the Learning Studio on the ground floor which is located off the Engine hall, and in the Coal Store which is located above the Learning Studio on the first floor and is accessible by lift which is wheelchair accessible. It can be accessed via the main lift near the reception area which has audio announcements.

Infrared hearing loop facilities are available in the Coal Store Conference Room. If you will need to use the hearing loop, please let us know in advance of attending Summer School.

Gender neutral toilets which are also accessible are located in the Engine Hall on the ground floor. All of the toilets are accessible by lift with no steps or ramps.
