Public Dreaming: a method of constructing space
Dive into Public Dreaming with Misk Kendal and score your stories like never before, let’s get creative live!
Together, we will create experimental soundscapes with our collective and personal dreams.
Each Bi weekly Thursday we are joined by a Manchester based producer / sonic practitioner to further explore the sounds of our dreams. On select Saturdays we will be joined by practitioners further afield building bridges across spaces. Over these sessions we will learn to make experimental soundscapes through play, dreaming, recording, listening, improvising… considering how we can make atmospheres for cohesion. Come as you are… Join in as much or as little as you like. We want this to be a place where we can feel free to play and ‘fail’ with each other.
We’d like you to bring a voice recording with you (1-2 minutes) this could be a recording of you or someone else recounting a dream, telling a story, a poem or describing a location in detail – anything! A voice memo on your phone will do just fine.
In this workshop we’ll look at how we can complement and respond to a voice recording with sound design and musical score. There will be samples available but we encourage you to go out into the world and record some of the sounds you experience
For this session we will be using cakewalk next a free music production software to arrange our recorded audio and create a composition around it
Please download and set up before workshop https://www.cakewalk.com/next
Misk and Kath will be on hand to help you throughout the workshop. We’ll begin with guided discussion about what we might create together and move into a tutorial on arrangement, effects and sound design
Together, we’ll break down a piece that misk has made on cakewalk. We’ll go through composition, sample editing and effects after this there’ll be an hour to play with support from Misk and Kath.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have the bones of an audio piece you can continue to work on – join the IMAA discord where we’ll discuss projects, share useful links and support eachother in the public dreaming forum.
Spaces are free, reserve your spot here!
