The Mill’s collaborative, exploratory style makes the studios a focal point for the north west’s arts community, visiting international artists and exchanges. As an organisation, Islington Mill revels in making as little distinction between work and play, outcome and process and chaos and control as possible, garnering regional, national and international recognition.

We create opportunities for artists – for the exploration of self-organisation, responsibility, participation and freedom – through a DIY ethos, building a platform for future emerging artists. Operating outside a commercial, profit-led agenda, we are a genuinely independent arts organisation that places nurturing, supporting and inspiring creativity at the heart of everything we do.

Responsive and enterprising, we give artists the opportunity and creative freedom to innovate and thrive. Since its inception, the Mill been involved in the launch of 1,500 artists and makers, nationally and internationally; around £3 million has also been reinvested in experimental residencies, retreats and collaborations which have gone on to inform mainstream commercial and grant-funded practice.

Our aim has always been to provide the environment, resources, contacts and inspiration to lead fully creative lives, encouraging people to explore themselves and their work as artists in the fullest sense of the word. Internationalism is a cornerstone of the Mill’s work, creating networks and exchanges, both digital and physical. One third of the artists showcased at the Mill are international, 17% are national and 50% based locally. In 2013, we organised our first mass residency, in Ibiza; residencies in Berlin, Liverpool, New York and London have followed.
